Your car’s system works as a result of the belts and hoses connecting all the components together. When the key is initially turned, the battery supplies the charge that charges the electrical system and starts the engine. From there, the alternator takes over to keep everything charged.

If the timing belt were missing, the engine’s cam and crankshafts wouldn’t have a way to open and close the valves and pistons. Without the belt’s teeth to connect to those on the sprockets, they are simply idle, and so is the engine. If the engine isn’t able to start, then the alternator won’t be able to keep your car charged because there’s no engine to supply the power for the belt to drive it.

Each part is dependent on the other in the operation of your vehicle, and the belts and hoses allow those parts to work. We’re here to answer your questions. The next time you’re in Southold, stop in to our auto parts shop and speak with a knowledgeable member of our staff.
